Life was hard on the street but somehow, the Good Lord blessed me and I became a winner. A lesson learned and a life rebuilt.

It's been my experience that you rarely run into BAD parents. You find parents without the resources and skills to raise a child to their full potential but no one finds out that they're pregnant and starts thinking, "I'm going to do everything in my power to irrevocably fuck my child up." Let's face it, if you even take the time to talk to your child right there they have one thing above a feral child, the skill of communication.

"Streetwise" is filled with delicious paradoxes, but perhaps the most fascinating paradox has to do with the parents of these kids. On the one hand, it's easy to condemn the parents as drunken buffoons, negligent monsters, and/or apathetic slobs. On the other hand though, any parent who has raised a kid who can live by his or her wits on the streets some deserves credit.
